Hello everyone,
I am really not practical with all this IT issues (homebrew, fink, etc..).
I have tried my best but I did not succeed in installing Synfig on my macbook. I have tried it on a PC and it seems to be a great software. I would love to use it for a project that is expected to be completed in a couple of months (which means I need to start very soon)... do you have any idea when/wheter the installer will be available so that I know if I can wait for it or start looking for another software?
Thanks a lot and sorry for my IT ignorance!
Cheers!
Lorenzo: thanks for your interest. I actually tried building Synfig months ago and didn't know where to start. I took a look at it recently and then realized I now understood what I was doing wrong. It is understandable that it's confusing at first. I plan on getting the installer done by this weekend, but I can't promise anything. The first version will be simple:
- run some scripts that download, optimize and build the dependencies using homebrew
- create a Mac wrapper around the homebrew package that runs in X11.app
Basically, all the user has to worry about is double-clicking on an icon. However, there are some minor flaws with this approach, you can decide how they affect you:
- You will have to get the extra developer tools that apple does not ship with your computer from developer.apple.com (It's a simple, one click installer, you don't need to worry about any complications but it would be nice if this step weren't necessary)
- You need an Intel Mac with Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) or higher.
- It won't look or behave quite like your other Mac apps.
These I all plan to eliminate when I have some more time to look into how Homebrew works, so it will feel like a Mac app, run on older Macs, and not require the developer tools. I plan on achieving this by doing a bit of research and trying out different things, so I don;t think that will be ready just yet. If you feel any of these minor problems aren't suitable, you will probably need to wait or figure out something else. I hope this helps!
